Peninsula’s Yacht Team at the Superyacht Technology Show: A New Perspective on Marine Fuel

25 April 2025

The Superyacht Technology Show brings together leading-edge suppliers, forward-thinking operators, and tech enthusiasts from across the luxury yachting world. Focused on the latest technological advancements reshaping the superyacht industry, the event is aimed at captains, engineers, fleet managers, shipyards, and decision-makers looking for practical solutions and future-focused ideas. Peninsula was also recognised with the Outstanding Contribution to Superyacht Technology Award, a prestigious honour that celebrates forward-thinking innovation and lasting impact within the industry.

Held over two days, the show is more than just a showcase—it’s a hub for knowledge exchange, problem-solving, and collaborative innovation. From immersive workshops to short-form technical talks, the event provides attendees with valuable insights into the technologies transforming the yachting industry.

This year, Peninsula took a leading role in the programme with not just one, but two sessions that captured the attention of both technical and operational professionals.

Technical Training in association with the PYA

Ahead of the main event, Peninsula hosted a one-hour technical training session in partnership with the Professional Yachting Association (PYA). This session focused on HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and tackled common concerns and misconceptions head-on. Attendees were guided through the practical realities of renewable diesel, addressing key questions such as:

  • Can I use it in my existing system?

  • Will it require modifications?

  • Where is it available?

The format was informative, relaxed, and designed to build confidence and awareness among yacht crew and operators who are increasingly curious about sustainable fuel options but unsure about the implications of making the switch.

A Fresh Take on Renewable Diesel: Peninsula’s Tech Talk

On the opening day of the Superyacht Technology Show, Peninsula took the stage during a TED-style segment where each speaker was given 15 minutes to share real-world insights—not sales pitches. Peninsula’s talk, “Redefining the Way We View Renewable Diesel”, stood out by flipping the usual narrative.

Instead of leading with the benefits of HVO and synthetic diesel, the talk began with a critical look at why conventional diesel might be letting the industry down. Incomplete combustion, engine residue, and the inefficiencies that come with it don’t align with the high standards of experience expected in the yachting world.

The session encouraged attendees to think differently: in an industry where premium service is the norm, why do we accept a fuel that compromises performance? What if there were an alternative that didn’t come with those drawbacks?

Peninsula left the audience with a compelling idea: we’re happy to pay more for quality across every other aspect of yachting—why not fuel?

HVO and BFuture

To answer the questions from the presentation, and as part of their presence at the Superyacht Technology Show, Peninsula also spoke about BFuture, its sustainable alternative to conventional diesel. BFuture is an HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) fuel that superyachts can use immediately to reduce their carbon footprint, without requiring any changes to onboard systems.

One of its standout advantages is flexibility: BFuture can be blended with traditional diesel in any ratio and even bunkered directly on top of existing fuel. While there is a slight premium—typically around 20 to 25 euro cents per litre—this is often a minor factor for VAT-paid yachts operating in European waters. Availability is expanding rapidly, particularly around the Mediterranean, and while sourcing may be more challenging in remote areas, global distribution networks are developing quickly. Most importantly, the ability to switch between BFuture and conventional diesel as needed ensures seamless operations wherever the yacht may cruise.
